With 1 in 3 children failing to pass their GCSE English at Grade C or above there seems to be an institutional problem with the way Shakespeare is speaking to us. Gillian West describes this disaffection as a result of pupils being ''expected to feel awe for a writer who cannot even write understandable English.''
