A native of the Fens country in Lincolnshire, Charles Faulkner and wife Elizabeth left England in 1848 to start a new life in Australia. After only 3 weeks at sea on board the barque Artemisia, tragedy struck when Elizabeth died and was buried at sea. Charles sought his fortune by prospecting for gold at Ballarat and California before settling in Maryborough, Queensland and marrying Emma Woodman. After farming at "The Pocket" in Maryborough and prospecting for gold at Gympie in 1867, he and Emma with their 9 children moved to the Bundaberg district where he established the successful Woodlands Sugar Plantation near Burnett Heads. Research for this biography has been carried out by one of Charles's great grandsons, Morland Smith.
