An Account of the Rise and Progress of Mahometanism - With the Life of Mahomet Book

This book is basically a biographical and analytical account of nine contemporary Islamic activist intellectuals. Through the diverse lives and works of these individuals (ranging from Khurshid Ahmed of Pakistan to Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia), the authors show that the "Islamic resurgence" is by no means monolithic. The authors take an interesting stand in labeling all these individuals as "Islamic intellectuals." Although their views diverge on issues relating to Islam and modernity, Islamic law, and Islam and the West, all these individuals are publicly active in the articulation of their understanding of the role that Islam should or can play in contemporary times.

The book follows three distinct periods within the Islamic resurgence, and was written before Sept. 11th. It would be interesting to do a second edition to evaluate the most recent "Islamic intellectual" activity.
