Introduction to Nonimaging Optics Book

This informational book immediately grabs the reader's attention with an enthralling "What If" scenario that targets an 'average' person's daily life, urging the reader to read on. This book discusses today's energy crisis in a way that may cause the younger generation to take greater interest in it. It addresses the potential end of fossil fuels through real life examples of how an 'average' person's day would be affected by the shortage or complete lack of fossil fuel. It is also good to note that Miller asks a lot of questions throughout the text that clearly display critical thinking. While this element of the text does not need to be used explicitly for a lesson, it could be used to illuminate such questions for one's students. This text has clear reader's tools (captions, graphics, index etc.) that are accessible and may help students to identify such structures in other texts. I find this text particularly important because it is so pertinent to our world today. I could see myself using this text either during guided reading or by giving it to a student, who is at or near a level R, to read on his/her own. And lastly, because this book is one of a series of similarly enticing informational books, a student who enjoys this book may branch out and read others within the series, thereby increasing his/her intake of nonfiction text.
