The Song Of The Blood-Red Flower
Suomi 100 vuotta -haasteen toinen teos oli tämä teos, joka oli nimeltä tuttu, mutta muuten en tiennyt ollenkaan mitä odottaa, mutta voin sanoa että mitä vastaan tuli, sitä en ainakaan ollut osannut odottaa! Kirjan päähenkilö Olavi on todellinen auervaara: ison talon levoton poika ryhtyy tukkijätkäksi, ja hurmaa jokivarrelta naisen toisensa perään. Kerronta on kuitenkin (ainakin modernein silmin) erittäin tahdikasta, ja mikäli Olavin ja tämän rakastettujen välillä on muuta kuin halailua ja suutelua, niin sen suuntaan enintäänkin vihjaillaan. Kirja lie ollut kuitenkin oman aikansa 50 Shades of Grey, siksipä kai se olikin menestysteos julkaisuaikoinaan. Seksi myy ja on myynyt aina.
Kirjan alku toi elämänriemullaan mieleen Katri Valan runon Kukkiva maa. Hauska yksityiskohta kerronnassa oli se, miten esineet ja kasvit puhuvat, keskustelevat ja kommentoivat tapahtumia sivustakatsojina. Tässä esimerkki:
Kuinka kaunista!» huudahti nuorukainen, katsoen tyttöä silmiin. »En minä ole ikänäni mitään näin kaunista nähnyt!»
»En minäkään», vastasi tyttö liikutettuna.
»Emmekä mekään!» hymyilivät puut rannalla.
»Emmekä me!» nyökäyttivät päivännoudot vastakkaisen rannan törmältä.
Pelkkää iloa ja rakastuneitten kukerrusta kirja ei kuitenkaan ole. Jossain vaiheessa menneisyyden haamut saavat kiinni kotoansa pois lähteneen Olavin, joka on pakomatkalla sekä vanhempiaan että itseään. Olavin painiskelu sisimpänsä kanssa on katkeransuloista luettavaa.
