Lion and the Mouse: A Retelling of Aesop's Fable Book

In this retelling of Aesop's fable, a little mouse convinces a mighty lion not to harm him. He claims that someday he will return the favor when the lion king lets him go free. The day comes all too soon when the lion is caught in a net trap and the little mouse uses his sharp teeth to gnaw through the net to set the lion free. The message that an act of kindness is never wasted is the closing line of this retelling. The text is not all that exciting, but sufficient for those just learning to read. The illustrations do add a bit of humor and the expression of great sadness on the lions face when he is caught in the net is perfect. None of the animals are created with extensive detail, but are drawn with rather broad outlines and shapes. They are interesting, which makes them a good pairing with a slightly bland text. Part of the "Read-it! Readers" series which come in four color-coded levels. Green, which is the level for this one, is the most complex.
