Examines how autumn brings observable changes in weather, nature, and people.

Nancy Garhan Attebury - Children's Literature

Harvest time, frosty mornings, colorful leaves, honking geese, and traveling humpback whales are parts of autumn in different places in North America. This seasonal book from the "Signs of the Season Around North America" series is well structured and information-packed. Simple sentences present facts and happenings in the following regions: Alaska and Northern Canada, New England, the Midwest, the Appalachian Mountains, the California Coast, and Deserts. From the easy-to-read text, youngsters will learn about autumn as well as monarch butterflies, why leaves change colors, and a harvest moon. Simplistic, vibrant illustrations add to but do not detract from the text. A four-word glossary, a leaf activity, and added resources are a plus. The only drawback may be that the text begins and ends with the question "What happens in autumn where you live?" While this may bring youngsters to think about autumn where they live, it may also cause confusion since the book does not hold the answer for all readers in North America. For this reason, teachers or librarians could choose to steer away from an otherwise informative book. 2003, Picture Window Books,
