How the protagonist shapes the primitive world, tries to improve it, secretly brings the 19th century technology and democracy, and is confronted with the cruelty, madness, and suffering of this horrible period is astonishing in its creativity. Feudalism plus escalating faith was a match made in hell, costing humankind 1,5k years of potential earlier development, killing hundreds of millions or even more. (hide spoiler)]
