Picasso is most known for his cubism but a visit to the Barcelona museum is a surprising and fascinating journey through his complete creation. I understood his genius for the first time. He was not the slave of any particular current, not even of modernism. He used a broad range of styles with obvious ease. Amazing drawings, flavours of impressionism, even pointillism and pastel do reveal an outstanding talent playing on canvas and delighting on expressing himself. You can see he is not struggling to paint something in a certain or acceptable way. He is simply in control, above all that was produced before him and yet proposing something new. His oeuvres are a history of art in themselves. I find difficult to use words for describing the visual amazement experienced trough his collection. His definition for Cubism is fascinatingly simple: ''...a way of expressing what our eyes and minds perceive, with all the possibilities that drawing and colour contain in their own qualities. In it we find a source of unexpected pleasure, of discoveries....'' I would extend this to define art in general, the details of different styles remaining a matter of personal taste.
