Jean Boreen, Ph.D. - Children's Literature

Ashley, a young girl, likes to help her neighbor Mrs. Wagner putter in the garden. One day Mrs. Wagner invites Ashley to work on a group of flower planters by herself, but when Ashley starts to question whether she actually can pot the flowers correctly, a friendly bee named Ruby Lee comes to her aid by reminding her that she does know how to plant the flowers and that she is capable or responding to the challenge. When Mrs. Wagner returns and congratulates Ashley on a job well done, Ashley asks her if she knows that bumble bees really are not supposed to be able to fly. Mrs. Wagner's response is yes, and that the bumble bee has the courage because God whispered to the bee that "You can do it," and because the bee trusted God, it was able to fly. Ashley takes this knowledge in, knowing that if she just "bee-lieves," she can accomplish anything she needs to. The illustrations throughout this text are beautiful, and the book ends with a glossary of words useful to know when reading the text. 2005, Bumble Bee Publishing, Ages 6 to 9.
