This unique collaboration between Alex Katz and Robert Creeley is not the traditional illustrated poem, but rather a poem by Creeley composed in response to Katz's artwork. Thirteen black line etchings and a tipped-in color plate are each accompanied by a four line stanza from Creeley's poem. The economy and grace of the etchings are thoughtfully matched by the poem, in which simple expressions carry the weight of complex emotions. Spending their summers in Maine, both Katz and Creeley are inspired by the rugged natural landscape there, and the text and images in Edges are linked to this underlying force. This book includes an essay by British artist and critic Merlin James, and video stills of rustic Maine by Vivien Bittencourt. Printed on an elegant paper stock, this beautifully designed clothbound edition is a special creation by two of the most prominent post-war American artists working today.
