Having ridden the Orphan Train from New York City to Texas in 1904, Eddie and Tommy start an exciting new life in a small country town.
Gr 3-5-In September, 1904, five orphans are put on a train in New York City bound for Seguin, Texas, where they are to start new lives with new families. The four boys and one girl travel with two nuns. On arrival, after initial doubts of acceptance, the children are warmly received by the awaiting parents. Adjustment to their unaccustomed surroundings is pretty easy and quick. Life goes on as usual, with some mishaps including a wild chase by a bull and a mill fire. The writing is stilted and dull without any intrigue or feeling. The story progresses as a list of events. Characters are flat and one dimensional, and there is little to make readers interested in the book's outcome. Joan Lowery Nixon's ``The Orphan Train Quartet'' (Bantam) gives a better view of this part of America's history and is told with suspense, drama, and emotion.-Rita Soltan, Baldwin Public Library, Birmingham, MI

The Texas Orphans: A Story of the Orphan Train Children
BookList: Tilghman, the author of In a Father's Place (1990) and Mason's Retreat (1996), returns to the rich themes of father-son relationships and family bonds. Like Nicholas Sparks, Tilghman writes with bittersweet warmth and understanding, loving and forgiving his characters even as he reveals their flaws. New York ad exec Eric Alwin's life is at a crossroads: his 30-year marriage is suffering, and he finds himself chafing against his suburban world of diminishing possibilities. The care of his stroke-debilitated father, Frank, a selfish man who abandoned his family and whose political career ended in scandal, only adds to Eric's troubles. When encroaching mortality causes Frank to attempt to make amends, Eric accompanies his father on a road trip to the South--a journey that prompts self-examination for both men. While the writing sometimes hinges on the sentimental (echoing the Hallmarkesque title), this is a satisfying family drama told in a firm but compassionate voice. -- MishaStone (BookList, 06-01-2004, p1706)
