The arrival of the Herald doesn't do much as Anda isn't involved for long and is clearly just an excuse to get Shandi back in town.

Shandi's whole character has changed, which... eh. I didn't really buy the whole "oh I just needed a purpose" thing after the last book gave us a completely different picture of her which it never once hinted was anything more. Again, it felt kind of like an afterthought. And her relationship with Steelmind was... whaaaaa? Why even bother with that one? I don't understand. We don't know anything about either of them. We have no reason to get even remotely invested.

Keisha's relationship worries start up in the third book after a perfectly good start in the second book, and go on too long and then just suddenly stop.

And the final bit where Darian finally finds his parents, well... it's brief. REALLY brief. Like, the book doesn't actually say I don't think, but they got there, then they talk, then they sleep, then there's a war, then they talk again, then the parents are like "welp, bye now", and then it's kind of just... over? Two days I guess, of seeing his parents after being separated from them as a young boy and never knowing if they were alive or dead, and then being like "okay, I'm good, will probably never see you again, okay bye!", and yeah, that was a lot of tacked on stories to get to that ending.
