The Blood Is The Life
If I had to describe Kaplan's argument in 160 characters or less, I might say this: James, Dreiser & Wharton freaked by Gilded Age, preserve their privilege through plots putting immigrants & socialists back in their place. The author is important and engaging (for an academic), and if her central claims seem somewhat obvious to us now, it's just a sign of the undeniable influence the book has had on three decades of scholarship. Recommended for people interested in American literary realism, but if you're interested in American literary realism you knew that already.
