Minnie and Tessa are best friends. The two fourteen year olds are sewing machine operators at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York City. It isn't easy for a Jewish girl and a Catholic girl to be friends in 1911, but Minnie and Tessa must depend on that friendship when the Triangle factory goes up in flames and leaves them trapped on the ninth floor. This story of friendship and courage is based on true accounts of the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire of March 25, 1911.
The first picture I saw as I opened the book was the building where the fire occurred. Tears came to my eyes. I remembered walking pass that building a few years ago when I stopped to read the plaque that commemorated this horrible tragedy. The story of the friendship and courage of two girls, Mini and Tease, is fictional, but the facts of the story are accurate and well presented.
