Each section starts with a brief illustrated description of the anatomy. Thereafter, each of the major disease categories is introduced by a brief description of the pathophysiology, indications, and strategy of operative treatment. Surgical methods are presented in great detail with excellent color illustrations showing the major steps of the procedure and numerous detailed sketches illustrating important maneuvers and points in technique. In the esophagus section, the more common surgical problems are included, and a standard approach preferred by the authors is well described for each. The section on exploratory laparotomy and abdominal trauma is brief. It presents in atlas form the description of useful maneuvers for exploration, understandable to the novice and useful for the experienced surgeon.
