The author takes a professional military historian's view of the ten months from the declaration of war to what he considers to be the defeat of Dunkirk. It is enhanced by the poignant memories of day-to-day sufferings endured by the men involved as well the courage and despair shown. His account of those months does not make for comfortable history but it does shed a sane light on what has become folk mythology.
