Gung Ho! How to Draw Fantastic Military Comics
Three things drew me to this book: its deeply layered art, the addition of practical process description and my familiarity with the art of one of the artists (Dave McKean).
The book does not disappoint in any of these respects. The production quality is excellent. Photos of each artist's work are plentiful, large and crisp. The process descriptions include a product list and numbered reference photos. The author, whose own work is included in the book, demonstrates both practical experience and theoretical knowledge of mixed media.
I have only two criticisms, which go to style rather than substance:
(1) I dislike passive voice for process descriptions. It lends a sorcerer's apprentice feel the description: "Paint is applied"'as if the the brush took on a life of its own, sans the artist. This usage isn't unusual for process descriptions, but it's grating nonetheless.
(2) Is there any subject so compelling, so vital that the rarefied and airless abstractions of academia cannot enervate it? I've yet to discover one. Of all subjects, art deserves concrete language, for it enters our consciousness through the senses and, hopefully, touches our heart on it way upstairs to the cranium.
These said, whether you are interested in mixed media art and artists, are expanding your own skill set to include the newer digital tools or just enjoy art which offers intriguing layers of imagery and meaning, you'll find and enjoy it in Art Revolution.
