A biography of the mathematician, teacher, photographer, and author who wrote "Alice in Wonderland."

Lynn Evarts - VOYA

For more than one hundred years, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's story about Alice and what she finds down the rabbit hole has entertained and intrigued readers, young and old. Dodgson's life was that of a mathematician, an artist, a church deacon, and a photographer who is best known for his children's tales. The story of Alice began as an amusement for the Liddell children, the daughters of the dean of Christ Church where Dodgson lectured, during long afternoons of boating, and at young Alice Liddell's urging, became a published illustrated story for children. Dodgson had many talents however, and although his writing made him famous, his photography was his true passion. It also caused him the most difficulty because he often photographed young girls (and a few boys) naked (with their mothers' permission and escort). This book is another installment in Lerner's respected series of biographies. The cover is nicely composed, and the photography interspersed throughout the text allows the reader to see into Carroll's life and photographic art. Carpenter addresses the issue of Carroll's proclivity for young girls, yet she manages to keep it from becoming the focus of his relationship with Alice. Because Carroll kept a copy of all the letters he wrote, there is a great deal of primary information that flows nicely with the text of the biography. For those students who are assigned a biography unit or those who just wish to know more about Alice in Wonderland, this book provides an easy-to-read, concise story of the life of a beloved author. Index. Illus. Photos. Maps. Biblio. Source Notes.
