The fundamental purpose of Husserl's Philosophie als Strenge Wissenschaft (1911) was a humanistic effort to respond to spiritual skepticism by placing philosophy on what he thought to be a scientific foundation, according to McCafferty (philosophy and religious studies, Holy Family U.) He judges Husserl to have failed to adequately respond to the crisis of spiritual skepticism and, comparing Husserls work to ideas from Aristotle and Aquinas's Summa Theologica, finds that the foundations of philosophy must rest on a metaphysical doctrine that reaches beyond pure human reason.
