Cultural dialectic
Denne hadde du ikke hørt om, nei? Nick Hornbys første bok er en tynn (160 sider) essaysamling om en håndfull amerikanske samtidsforfattere som han mente verden burde vite mer om.
Det er ingenting her som gir hint om det som skal komme senere i Hornbys forfatterskap; ingenting av den personlige tonen, skarpheten og de lavmælte, treffende setningene.
Nick Hornby var på denne tiden litteraturkritiker i en rekke aviser, men essayene i denne boka virker å være skrevet utenom, og de hadde ikke fungert som aviskritikker. Stilen er saklig og respektfull (et finere ord for kjedelig), med fotnoter. Boka faller mellom to stoler: Litt lett som litterær analyse og med for lite klo til å gripe tak i leseren. Passende nok heter hvert kapittel det samme som den omtalte forfatteren - ingen vinkling, bare en fin rusletur gjennom folk som Richard Ford, Anne Tyler og Richard Carvers forfatterskap.
Jeg fikk i det minste lyst å lese mer av forfatterne som er nevnt i forrige setning, selv om Nick Hornby ikke akkurat formidler dem med fyr og flamme.
