James Joyce was one of the most challenging and controversial writers of the 20th century. His experiments with language and narrative structure helped redefine novelistic conventions and set new standards for prose writing. Critical Companion to James Joyce is an essential reference to everything one needs to know about Joyce and his work. Additional features include a chronology, bibliographies of primary and secondary sources, a working outline of Finnegans Wake, the Ulysses schema, and more. Critical Companion to James Joyce will guide readers through Joyce's fascinating life and work.

Library Journal

Following the format, style, and organization of other titles in Facts On File's "Critical Companion" series, Fargnoli and Gillespie, who have both written extensively on James Joyce, divide this reference to the writer's life and work into four parts. Part 1 is a brief biography. Part 2 focuses on individual works (e.g., Dubliners), including its publication date, a brief history, a synopsis, early critical reception, contemporary perspectives, and one or two recommended titles for further reading. The entries in Part 3 cover people (including friends and relatives), places, and ideas related to Joyce. Part 4 contains an appendix, a bibliography of the writer's work, a bibliography of secondary sources, chronologies, family trees, and more. The entries vary in length from one paragraph (e.g., "Cosgrave, Vincent") to 71 pages (e.g., "Ulysses"). Cross references appear within the individual entries as well as in the index, and a few black-and-white photographs are scattered throughout. Bottom Line A great primer for those needing a detailed introduction into Joyce's world, this is recommended for public, academic, and high school libraries.-Laurie Selwyn, Grayson Cty.
