The State of Afro-American History is an authoritative and provocative examination of the Afro-American experience during slavery and since emancipation. Individual essays by prominent scholars cover the ways in which black slaves shaped their environment, the forces that influenced the black urban experience in the United States, the evolution of scholarship in Afro-American history, and the merger of American and Afro-American histories.

Library Journal

Meier and Rudwick, two specialists in the field, provide a sweeping yet pene trating view of the development of black history in this century. They as sess the role of all the major scholars, the professional journals and societies, and the universities and the founda tions in shaping its growth. Social and intellectual forces are carefully ana lyzed. Combining research in primary and secondary sources with interviews with some 200 noted historians, the au thors show how black history grew from a fringe specialty to a central place in American historiography. Now, they note, it is somewhat on the decline. The personality clashes, the nationalist pressures, the tug between interpreta tions by race or class, are discussed in illuminating detail. A sophisticated, provocative book that belongs in every major library. Complementing the Meier-Rudwick volume is Hine's collection of papers from a recent Purdue conference on the study and teaching of Afro-American history in the schools and colleges. Al though the scholars and educators re view in much less detail some of the ground covered by Meier and Rudwick, this book will be useful for the pointers offered on unexplored avenues for re search as well as fresh methods for teaching. After assessing slavery, emancipation, and urban and women's studies of the black experience, the book delves into its reflection in the popular media, and its frequent omis sion in textbooks. Both these volumes demonstrate how central to American life is the experience of black Ameri cans. Milton Meltzer, New York
