My confidence in the postliberal project has now been shattered and I am totally fine with it. But it should be noted that Lindbeck's proposal concerned itself primarily with ecumenical endeavors, and when this is forgotten, the value of The Nature of Doctrine is compromised. Tanner's turn to postmodern notions of culture help us to see how Wittgensteinian postliberalism is not very Wittgensteinian at all. Her departure from postliberalism is more of a, "hey, if we're going to do this postmodern cultural anthropology thing, then let's go all the way." On my reading, I think her assessment is mostly correct-and about 25 years later, postliberalism has been hijacked by neo-Reformation fundamentalists, demonstrating the trajectory that Tanner saw this project moving toward.
