During the American Revolution over 3,000 slaves were their freedom if they would desert their American masters and fight for the British. They were evacuated to Nova Scotia after the British defeat and were treated there as cheap labor by the white loyalists. In 1792 they were offered a new home in West Africa, and over 1,200 former slaves became the founders of Freetown in Sierra Leone. This history follows ten of those freed slaves from their escape in Virginia and the Carolinas to their eventual settlement in Freetown, where they struggled for another decade for the right to govern themselves. The author's credentials are not identified. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
