Elizabeth has always known that her daughter, Nina, doesn't care for her. If she's honest with herself, she has little liking for the girl either. Brooding, difficult and sexually provocative, Nina is heading for trouble, even if her besotted and ineffectual father makes excuses for her at every turn. When the local school is set alight and the police start looking for an arsonist, Elizabeth is sure her daughter is involved. But, owing to the affair in her life, she refuses to talk to the police.
