Children's Literature

The story of Anne Frank is known worldwide. Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl born in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 12, 1929. At the age of thirteen, she and her family, as well as other German Jewish people, became victims of Adolph Hitler's Nazi regime. Hitler hated Jewish people and he began to imprison them in prisons called concentration camps. Frank's family hoped to escape the camps by hiding out in a secret apartment. In 1942, she and her family, as well as the Van Pels family, spent two years in this apartment on the top two floors of Otto Frank's office at 263 Prinsengracht. Later, an eighth person named Fritz Pfeffer came to live with them. Friends and employees kept the business operating and risked their lives to help the Frank Family. In June, 1942, Anne was given a diary for her thirteen birthday. Almost a month later she and her family were in the secret apartment hiding from the German Army. Frank began to record daily events, her emotions and fears in her diary. Eventually, the Frank family was discovered and sent to concentration camps. After Anne's death in a concentration camp, the diary was given to Otto Frank, her father, the only survivor of the Frank family. This diary was published in 1947. Today, over thirty million copies of Anne Frank's diary have been sold. In this forty-eight page book, author Saunders has told Frank's story through a cartoon format. In six chapters, the reader sees the story of Anne Frank from the rise of the Nazis, her early years, life under the Nazis, her hiding place, and the final months. The bold, deep colors of the illustrations highlight the cartoon format, while narrative and dialogue tell the frightening story of the Frankfamily. Over six million Jewish people were killed by the Nazis. Over one million children were victims. Anne Frank's diary tells the story of one of these children. A time line, facts, and glossary are included.
