These dogs, these dogs! They'll take over your space — but can't be beat for warmth — as celebrated in this spirited story with humorous illustrations.

What's a family to do when the bed is overrun by dogs? Move over, of course! In this rollicking, rhyming romp, Mom, Dad, and the kids settle in for a peaceful story before sleep — but their canine companions have other plans. Dog owners will recognize the familiar shenanigans pets engage in at bedtime: stretching out sideways, barking at outside noises no one else can hear, whining to be let out (and in again) all night long. But demands aside, adored dogs are still the coziest comforters around.

Children's Literature

Dogs are everywhere, and especially on the bed, in this story in rhyme about a family with six dogs who love to jump in bed with them. The verses describe the dogs and how they lounge and make themselves comfortable, and several of the verses end with an exasperated, "These dogs, these dogs!" At one point, when the mom and dad and the two kids are in bed, the dad tries to shoo them away. The dogs jump off, but then they begin to bark and growl. The mom lets them go outside, but they immediately want to come back in. The dogs fall asleep on the bed and begin to snore. The dogs take over the bed, and the family tries to sleep on the chair and the floor. The dogs gather around them, and they all go back to bed. The family decides that dogs are cozy and "it's worth sharing sleep with dogs." Comical illustrations show all the lively antics. Young children will enjoy the fun of reading about these very familiar pets. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
