Fandex: Bugs Book

Personal Reaction: I really do not like bugs, but this book was crazy interesting! It talks about all different things dealing with insects including what they eat and drink, what they look like, how they grow, body shape and size, etc. It really fascinated me.

Read Aloud: This would not be a good cover to cover read aloud for a classroom. You could definitely read parts of the book if you were learning about specific insects, but you would not want to read the whole thing through. This book would be really good for children who are interested in bugs, because it teaches anything from what an insect is to many different types of insects themselves! A good science lesson could be dealt with a certain insect out of the book. During science time, students could dissect and insect or maybe look at a fossil of an insect to teach about everything there is to know about that certain insect.

Independent Read: This would be a perfect independent read. This would be great for a kid who is interested in botany. The eyewitness books really share everything a kid could possibly want to know about a subject, which in this case is insects. A student could really sit down this and learn from the pictures and the words everything about a bug's life. This would be a good independent read for younger to mid elementary.

For Nonfiction: You could teach a lot of conventions with this book. First, you could teach the students the table of contents. You would have to tell them that the numbers next to the headings mean that you can find that topic on that page number. next, you could teach them about the index. The index in this books is HUGE. It can take you to a certain word or insect that you are particularly looking for throughout the book. You just follow that page number and you will find the information somewhere on that page.
