It's Your Time: Activate Your Faith, Achieve Your Dreams, and Increase in God's Favor
My first thought upon picking this book up was, "Why is he on the cover?" I didn't know how popular Joel Osteen is, or how marketable his image is. This was my first time reading anything of his.
This book is definitely humanly inspiring, since it focuses on "you," but I'm not convinced it's entirely biblical. I understand that we need to grow our faith and trust God completely. I know that God will provide what we need. But I don't entirely agree that God wants all of us to be "prosperous" or "rich." Blessed, yes, but even the poorest of the poor can be blessed. Does this mean we should settle in our current condition? No, but understand that becoming prosperous should not be our first priority, it should not be the one thing we are living for. That place should be filled with a constant reaching for God. To do and become what He wants us to. To bring more people to Him. Joel didn't go into that part of Christianity at all. And further more, he never mentioned how to grow in your spiritual walk. His basic message was: Have faith, and God will give you whatever you desire (which in today's society, I don't believe our desires line up with God's biblical examples of what we should desire.) After finishing the book, I looked up some reviews. This was the one I most agreed with:
Grading It's Your Time
I'm really not sure how I feel about this way of thinking. We should be far more concerned with what God's will is in our lives, and serving Him and others, not "Why isn't my life better? When is my payday coming?" etc. I mean really, what happened to storing our treasures in heaven? Read Matthew 6. I think I'll continue to live by Jesus' standards not Joel's, thank you very much.
