“Black makes important new interpretations of Whitman’s poems that will be of interest to all scholars of literature and psychology.†—Napier Wilt, University of Chicago Although Walt Whitman is known primarily by the last edition of Leaves of Grass (1891-1892), almost all of the important poems were composed before 1860. After this date, Whitman adopted a less personal voice and often revised or deleted passages in the early poems that revealed the personal origins of his poems. Stephen A. Black combines psychoanalytic, historical, and literary methods to study the development of Whitman’s poetic process during his most productive period. The first three editions of Leaves of Grass reveal evidence of psychological conflict, suggesting that poetic composition was the crucial emotional activity of Whitman’s life during the period. The writing of these poems, the author contends, involved journeys into the turmoil of the poet’s unconscious. The poems do not chronicle events: they are themselves the events. “Stephen Black’s argument is an original one, and his book ought to have a significant impact on Whitman studies.†— Frederick Crews, University of California, Berkeley Stephen A. Black is Associate Professor of English at Simon Fraser University.
