Take Daniel, Lacey's great-great-grandfather, growing up on his grandparents' Illinois farm in 1890. Daniel is happy on the farm, but he is determined to find a way to get out west to visit his father so they can be a whole family again. He hatches an ingenious if risky scheme to make the trip, but when he arrives at the depot in Valentine, Nebraska, he finds the little town abuzz with fears of a Sioux uprising. And an even bigger surprise awaits him at his father's cabin, forcing Daniel to rethink his idea of what makes a family whole.
Great-grandmother Tandy tells Lacey about a quilt given to their ancestor, Daniel, who, upset by the changes after his grandfather's death, leaves Illinois for South Dakota in 1891 to find his father, and learns about the Sioux Ghost Dance first-hand.

Daniel's Story, Vol. 3
Summary: Although this book is a fiction, the main idea is the climate change and its affect on the polar bears. Riley visits his uncle and aunt who are scientists in Canada. They have been concerned with polar bears running out of access to food due to the melting ice and scavenging in the villages, posing threat to themselves and to people.
Mentor writing trait: idea - climate warming and delay of the Hudson bay freezing. Fiction of Riley and his family researching the bears is organized around the information: the polar bears cannot hunt for food when the bay is not covered with ice and thus will look for food elsewhere, like in the towns. Presentation: some drawings but also photo illustrations from the region.

Lexile: AD940L, ages 5-8.
Recommendation: science lesson about climate change, study of mammals, taking care of nature.
