Children's Literature

As a child, I read every one of the "Childhood of Famous Americans" biographies I could find. Luckily for me, my school library had an extensive collection of the books. Now, thanks to Aladdin's new release of this more than sixty-five-year-old series, a new generation of children can enjoy these books, too. Each biography is a fictionalized account of the subject's life, including real events supplemented by fictional details and conversation. Although these books are not entirely unvarnished "truth," they are true to the spirit of the characters and their experiences growing up in America. The Abigail Adams biography traces the childhood of one of the country's most famous first ladies, from her sickly childhood as the daughter of a minister through her formative years to her courtship by the man who would be the second president of the United States. 2002 (orig. 1949), Aladdin/Simon & Schuster, $4.99. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green AGES: 8 9 10 11 12
