Earl is ready to do anything to avoid the meanest kid in school-even if it means playing dead.

Children's Literature

Earl Wilber is not really known as the most popular kid in fifth grade. Unfortunately for him he has been the victim of the infamous school bully, Eddie McFee. Eddie has repeatedly beat him up after class until Wilbur decides to pay him off each week to leave him alone. Although this seems to solve the problem, his problems have only begun. Eventually Wilbur runs out of his allowance money and refuses to let anyone know what is really going on. Eddie is not going to accept any late payments, and Wilbur is left to figure things out on his own. Fortunately for him, his two best friends Rosie and Maxie are ready and willing to help him get rid of Eddie for good. The question is whether Wilbur can have the courage to use blackmail and extortion to teach Eddie a lesson. All he has to do is convince him that he is dead, but of course that is not as easy as it seems. Bullying is a real problem in schools today, and the emotional turmoil that Wilbur goes through is felt by many children. They can easily connect with his pain and anxiety. As with most children, Wilbur looks to his friends, not his parents or teachers, for support. This book is a good choice for starting conversations with students about bullying in school and how children should or should not deal with the situations they find themselves in. "Geek Series Chronicles."
