This adorable character from SAM IS NEVER SCARED is back in another story preschoolers will identify with. Sam is so eager to make friends at his new school that he tells them a story that isn’t true. After all, he makes up bedtime stories for his little brother, who thinks Sam is the best storyteller ever! But when the truth catches up with him, Sam realizes the difference between telling a story and telling a lie—and he has to face his friends and tell them the truth.

Children's Literature

Young Sam, an anthropomorphic dog, assures us that he is "the most amazing kid in school." But like most kids in a new school, he wants to make a good impression. So he tells his classmates that his dad is an astronaut. Then they all want to be his friend. His storytelling, however, grows ever more imaginative. When he makes up a tale about older kids fighting with him, his parents decide to talk to his teacher. That night, Sam cannot sleep, realizing that everyone will know that he has made up his stories. He decides to tell the truth, even if that makes him seem boring. To his surprise, the other kids remain his friends. And his little brother still wants to hear more of his "best stories." The simple story is matched in the full-page oil paintings that focus on the characters, using very few props. The fun is in the childlike representations of the imaginary fire-breathing dragon or the multi-eyed green aliens, along with the friendly gestures of the after-school gang. Goossens effectively communicates Sam's feelings within the limits of his style. The moral is clearly shown.
