Children's Literature

This book, a part of the "Little Secrets" series, is more like the second-half, or even middle-third of a longer work. The first chapter jumps right into a scene started at the end of the previous book, and the last chapter ends with no real resolution to any of the situations. Each chapter focuses on one of five possible protagonists, not all of them likable. The constant switching of focus is disconcerting, and it is hard to remember just who all the characters are and how they are related. The story seems to follow Alison more than the other characters, and her relationship between her mother, a Martha-Stewart-like figure (including the legal problems), and her grandmother, Tamara Diamond, a rich woman with power to spare. However, there are also issues with Tom and Zoey, twins whose mother died and whose father is a powerful District Attorney; Kelly, who recently learned her mother was actually her aunt; and Chad, Kelly's new boyfriend who recently dumped Kelly's cousin, Alison. This book might be more appropriate for a reluctant teenage reader than for pre-teen audiences, especially if the teenage reader is a fan of in-crowd books.
