When I finished this story, I thought of how I could introduce metaphors to my class with the simple analogy in the story, in that the stories of the main character's family are like family jewels. I also enjoyed reading this book because it showed the main character's history with slavery, the rise of jazz, etc. I would use this book for classroom instruction by having the class record one of their family jewels in a story from their family's history. I would recommend this story to teachers because it can encourage students to find stories from their family history and take more from the past, along with appreciating their older relatives; in a time when it seems like children would rather watch TV or play a video games.
