Paths of Continuity
As an unashamedly 'pro-Serb' book written in 1994, this is well worth reading for a different perspective than we usually get/got in the West. The author is one of those hard-drinking, hard-smoking, hard-boiled Chicago reporters, and the book is essentially a collection of interviews with more educated and politically-involved residents of Belgrade she did on a long trip to the city in 1993.
Like any group, despite their many differences these residents collectively share some groupthink ideas that are bonkers to outsiders. We should all remember this because this will also be true of any group we belong to. And, chillingly, these residents were all taken by surprise by what happened to their country. The 'tide of history' was all the other way: greater integration rolled on, 'we were all just Yugoslavs'. This, too, is something we should all remember. There is no such thing as inevitability in history. History is just people doing stuff.
