When The History of Photography by Hemut and Alison Gernsheim was first published in 1955, it immediately established itself as the standard work on the subject, described by the Financial Times as 'the most important singe historical work in the field.' The first part of this classic book was revised by Professor Gernsheim and published as The Origins of Photography (1982). Now, in The Rise of Photography, he brings the revision of his magnum opus up to 1880.

The history of photography
It would be worth the price of admission even if it didn't include words. Because the images selected are often unearthly, just shivs of light. A truly great collection which draws from so many periods, and there are even some great color plates included. The writing and contextualization aren't bad either. You can probably find this on ABE.com cheap.
