The lost soul of American politics
A devastating, and too my mind unanswerable, rebuttal to the republican interpretation which seduced so many historians of the American Revolution in the 1970s and 1980s. Diggins' own account of the sources and nature of American liberalism is not entirely satisfactory, but his account is sedulous, thorough, and balanced, three qualities not always found in such exercises. Diggins' lack of partisanship, for lack of a better term, has perhaps led to this book being unfairly overlooked in the liberalism-republicanism controversy. It is well known, but should be equally well utilized.
