A compelling story full of magic and music.

Sylvie Bartram lives alone with Mr. Jackson the dog and her eccentric composer father, who invents strange and wonderful musical instruments. One day she returns from school to find a message left in toothpaste on the bathroom mirror: her father has been kidnapped. Later that night, the house is visited by a terrifying apparition—a half-man, half-creature who is searching for something and will not rest until he has found it. . . .

Sylvie uncovers an underground world of magic and evil, and with help from her friends, she must hold off a power that threatens the lives of all beings in the world. The Songman is at large, and is determined to steal music and use it for his own evil ends. . . .

From the Hardcover edition.

Children's Literature

The fantasy world is imposed on two average children, Sylvie, the protagonist, and her best friend, George. George is a new student in Sylvie's class and they are both thirteen years old. The 340-page novel keeps the reader turning pages to see what happens next in the scary episodes. Sylvie lives alone with her father since her mother was never found after an observed drowning. Sylvie is close to her father and fond of Mr. Jackson, her dog. One day, Mr. Jackson loses his voice as do all the animals in England. Adventures occur at school, on the train, and in strange places including forests. Dangerous episodes occur as the two friends embark on a hazardous quest to find Sylvie's suddenly, mysteriously missing father. George and Sylvie are bravely attempting the unusual mission without help from police or other adults. Sylvie is the leader and George questions her tactics, but goes along to help her. George displays a creative spirit when he helps free Sylvie and himself when they are held captive. This is Binding's first children's novel. He has written five adult novels which were enthusiastically received. Reviewer: Jennie DeGenaro
