I forgot how good "ES: Eternal Sabbath" opens. Fuyumi Soryo covers everything that needs to be established for the story. There is ES (aka Ryousuke for this volume) and Mine. He has the power to get into a person's mind and manipulate it. He's not really a bad guy and not really a good guy. He's ambiguous yet charismatic question mark. Then there is Mine, who works as a brain researcher. She's an oddball herself. He doesn't even notice her when their paths cross but she notices him. Being an oddball, she searches him out and her life won't be the same after that.
It has been a long time since I read this series. It was originally published in Japan starting in 2002 and then Del Rey brought it over in 2006. It is a series that is only available in manga as it never got an anime adaptation which is odd because it seems like it would be perfect for the Noitamina block. The pacing is great. The characters are ridiculously attractive. The plot is layered but still easy to follow and, most importantly, it would still work today. Maybe one day, it will get its adaptation. Until then, I'm re-reading. At 8 volumes, it is an easy commitment.
