The Nile
I've dipped into this over the years but never read the whole thing before. Why, I can't say, but I'm very glad to have read it now. It is packed with interesting history and a veritable smorgasbord of obsessive and passionate people. And he's very funny! I probably will never go to Egypt but travelling by book is deeply satisfying too.
I will happily find his other books and feel very sad to find he died this year.
