Sifting carefully through reports from newspapers, magazines, personal memoirs, and letters, Peter Cozzens' Volume 6 brings readers more of the best first-person accounts of marches, encampments, skirmishes, and full-blown battles, as seen by participants on both sides of the conflict. Alongside the experiences of lower-ranking officers and enlisted men are accounts from key personalities including General John Gibbon, General John C. Lee, and seven prominent generals from both sides offering views on "why the Confederacy failed." This volume includes one hundred and twenty illustrations, including sixteen previously uncollected maps of battlefields, troop movements, and fortifications.

Library Journal

Generations of readers began their study of the nation's bloodiest conflict with the firsthand accounts included in Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, a four-volume classic first published in the late 19th century. Following in the style of the earlier series, Cozzens, a Foreign Service officer with the U.S. Department of State and author of a large number of Civil War books, including the highly acclaimed campaign and battle trilogy The Civil War in the West: From Stones River to Chattanooga, has now produced a fifth volume. The new collection of primary documents includes articles from Century magazine, Harper's, Ohio Soldier, and other mid-19th-century periodicals. Major figures in the war detail their experiences, dealing with events from John Brown's prewar raid to life in the Lincoln White House to the last days of the Confederate government. Also included are relevant illustrations, maps, and background notes on the writers. This new volume is sure to interest readers as much as the original series and is highly recommended for public as well as academic libraries.
