Gramsci, Political Economy, And International Relations Theory
They should have called this book "Cox and friends" because Gramsci barely appears thorough the different chapters but our friend Cox and his 'all theory is for someone and for some purpose' (or something in the similar tone) appears at every turn of the page. So much, that if you didn't like Cox you will hate his ideas after finishing with this book (even when they criticize his work).
It is not only that the title is misleading (it is actually about neo-gramscians, not about Gramsci, and it is, as said above, basically about one of them, Cox (I am trying to make his name appear as many times as it appears in the book; I like challenges). It is also that the book doesn't offer much, and what does offer, it Cox..., I mean, it offers this information in the very I-will-try-to-make-myself-as-difficult-to-understand-as-possible style. Do you like your paragraphs with lots of notes and unintelligible style? We have got you covered. Every time I find one of these books (normally non-fiction, Cox approved), I always remember the: if you can't explain it in a way that a five-year-old can understand, you are doing it wrong (and you don't understand it yourself; hello, Foucault). Here is the same. Cox.
So, to put an end to this review, some interesting ideas, difficult style, too much repetition, and little Gramsci. Modern Coxians and Coxied Emperors.
