The first chapter entitled Estimation of Moisture in the Atmosphere and in the Ground from Satellite Data focusses on the need for water to maintain life. GEWEX, Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment, a subprogramme of the World Climate Research Programme has a major observational component - to measure and monitor with space based instruments - the atmospheric water vapour in all layers of the troposphere. GEWEX also measures the cloud water contents and the partition of its liquid and solid phases, the precipitation over continents and oceans, including snow, and various surface characteristics which allow the estimation of evaporation and evapotranspiration of water. Ocean and Land Productivity as Derived from Satellite Data contains six papers. The main features are land and ocean nutrients; ocean nutrients and upwelling; primary production and ocean colour productivity and finally ocean models.
